7/17/02 Disassembly observations (just a few)

bullet

No Oil on torqued main bolt threads in block

bullet

Main saddle all look very blue from heat and possible spun bearings in the past(Align Bore required and planned for anyhow....assuming this block isn't broken when we Magnaflux it...these saddles don't look good at all...I took several pictures of this....

bullet

Bore measurements,     (1) 4.1715/4.1715/4.1725, (2) 4.1720/4.1713/4.1720 (3) 4.1720/4.1715/4.1720, (4) 4.1720/4.1715/4.1725, (5) 4.1715/4.1710/4.1715 (6) 4.1715/4.1710/4.1720, (7) 4.1715/4.1710/4.1710, (8) 4.1715/4.1710/4.1720

bullet

Cam center line 2.418"+1.155+1.471= 5.044 (stock is 5.044)  perfect!!

bullet

Deck Height 8.687/8.688 + 1.471 = 10.158/10.159", stock deck is 10.170

bullet

Crank is 1UB and Crank bearings were .020 on rods and mains, crank is rusty, rust pits on journals especially rear main (pictures)

bullet

Pistons have overspray black paint on them in places that came through spark plug holes not covered after assembly. The c-clip on the pistons don't seem to be installed to the correct depth and may be the incorrect ones F/M was shipping for the last few years, need to replace these with Spirolox's if you use them in the future (pistons are new and most likely very salable on the internet...as F/M is not making these right now..

bullet

block was really covered in grease everywhere inside....camshaft has rust in many places though. I assume this was assembled just to keep things together but not for actual engine build....??? rear seal was a rope seal vs a neoprene lip seal??

bullet

Dave's 428 block bored to 4.175" (.045) as just too far out of spec (8/22/02)

9/19/02 Dave will order Crane camshaft to original specs and ship direct to us. Heads were CC'd at 71.5CC 9/19, Intake manifold P/C'd OK 9/10, Dave sent std rockers and we received both required "Original" bolts for the towers 9/17, Block went 4.175 and Arias pistons & rings to arrive 9/26 prox, crank will be ground 30/30 (20/20 now) after we install MS863P-30 and CB760P-30 Mich 77 brgs in Rods and block to calculate correct clearance we want ground into crankshaft. Rods being reconditioned as of 9/20 (pictures to follow), Block was 10.155 x 10.159 10.149 x 10.164 and way out of square...will end up at 10.148 prox as of 9/19. More pictures to follow...9/21

Additional information on 427 recv'd 7/16/02 email from Dave

a) I believe it is a standard block - but not sure.  I do know it is a "service block" manufactured in 1971 and placed in the Shelby GT 500 in place of the 428; (OK)

b) I will check with Shelby on intake manifold suitability, I get your points on this one.  The 2x4V is a more "attractive" option from a look point of view but would a singe 4V with a 780+ CFM Holley produce the same benefits (i.e.) good low to mid torque and approximately 400 to 500 hp with less hassle?(Yes, but it isn't as original looking)  Does it change what cam you choose? (Probably not any significant change for this HP application but will resolve this with selection of manifold)

c) I hear the Tremec 5 speed is good - do you have personal experience with these in the 427 application? (Yes, we have several Cobras running these for the last 4 or 5 years...) Is it a suitable pairing?(Yes, if Shelby allows for the tranny mounts and drive shaft length within their chassis options)  I heard the worst things about the 427 Cobras are cockpit heat and blowing up the clutch/bellhousing/tranny.(Cockpit heat is going to be resolved by you installing the best foil coated air bubble insulation on the floor boards and all around the foot box area and then the usual jute insulation under the carpet)(The bell housing needs to be SFI approved for your protection, the flywheel also needs to be SFI approved)  I will go with your suggestion over the Toploader if you think it is a better option i.e.) stronger connection, more modern design and the benefits of the toploader with the added luxury of the overdrive.  Can I purchase such equipment from you?(Yes, we would like very much to do the bell housing so it's dialed in to the crank centerline and then install the McLeod adapter and make sure the transmission aligns perfect with the bell housing, then we will remove the tranny and ship separately, they come with the correct Yoke for the rear output on the tranny  and they have internal shift linkage so nothing to adjust or fall off later on...you need to be sure Shelby allows for a nice gear shift lever, boot and chrome ring for the TKO's as I believe they use Richmond's etc too...but the TKO or TKO II are a great match and easy to service later on if needed and half the money of the Richmond's etc.)

***********end of 7/16/02 response*********

8/22/02

One connecting rod bearing is spun in the rod bore enough to actually remove the tang on both halves of the bearing but the rod big end itself looks to be OK (8/22/02)

9/19/02 current notes on 427 Engine

Block is 4.265 now and will be bored to 4.275 for Arias Pistons , #3 is a sleeved hole and block has been pressure checked as was some damage near the bottom of this sleeved area (OK)9/12/02, will run the Blue Thunder 2X4 MR intake for the Shelby (after confirming it's original stock 2X4 intake height) and most likely original Carbs. Roller Rockers will be Dove, MSD Ignition, Eagle H-Beam Rods, 76CC Edelbrock Heads OK and leave 8 bolt pattern for headers (9/19), Block has been bored with a deck plate to 4.275 (9/16), Square decked to 10.147, was 10.152 x 10.150, 10.154 x 10.154 as recvd...now square decked as of (9/18), Ok to install Comp Solid Cam 33-245-4 as of 9/19. Steel crankshaft will grind at 10/10 and F/M performance bearings 9-7170CH-10 and 125M-10 will be used...we will install in freshly alignbored block and Eagle rods to calculate bearing clearances prior to grinding to the exact size we need. Dura Bond FP33 performance cam bearings to be installed, ARP 155-4001 Head Studs, ARP 155-5421 Main Studs along with special shorter rear studs for the Aviaid pan installation are in the block now as it's being align honed.
